Show ads to specific geographic locations

  • AdWords location targeting allows ads to appear in the geographic location you choose: a specific country, a specific area within a country, within a certain radius around a location, or certain geographical groups.
  • With geographic location targeting, you can focus your ads on the regions where your target customers are located, while restricting them from serving in other regions, which effectively improvesReturn on investment

The real estate industry has a golden rule \"location, location, or location\", which is also suitable for displaying ads on AdWords. No matter how perfect your ads are, if you don’t display them in the right place, the effect may be greatly reduced. You can use AdWords location targeting to attract the right customers based on their location and the area where your business can provide services. You can set your geographic location and adjust it at any time.

Target the location that is right for your business

Get guidance on how to choose the best geographic location for your business.

Compare different types of geographic targeting: countries/regions, specific areas within a country/region, or within a certain radius around a location

Below is a detailed description of each geographic targeting level and the types of businesses that are suitable for each targeting level.

Location targeting Explanation Types of businesses that may be suitable Types of businesses that may not be suitable
country / region If your products and services are available in one or more countries, then you can target your ads to those countries. Compared to targeting a few cities or regions in a country, targeting the entire country can give you higher ad viewership.
  • Merchants doing business across the country
  • Online retailer for global shipments
  • Merchants doing business across multiple countries
Businesses that provide products or services only in certain regions or cities. In this case, you can target a single area or city instead.
A specific region in a country If your business only offers products or services in certain regions or cities, or if you want to focus ads on specific regions in a country, you can use a more precise targeting method. Depending on the target country, you can target regions, cities, or postal codes.
  • Merchants offering products or services in the local community
  • Businesses carrying out special activities in specific regions
  • Merchants who only sell products in specific regions or cities
Businesses who want to cover most areas of a country except a few areas (for example, the whole of China except Hainan). In this case, it’s best to target the entire country and then exclude other regions.
Within a certain radius around a location With area radius targeting (also known as \"neighborhood targeting\" or \"targeting a certain radius\"), you can choose to show ads to users located within a certain range around the business instead of selecting individual cities, regions, or countries /Region as the target geographic location.
  • Merchants offering products or services within a specific radius
  • Local businesses with a customer base located within a certain radius around the store
Only want to reach businesses in specific cities, regions, or countries.

Tips for choosing the geographic location for your business

When choosing location targeting, you need to consider the following:

  • The location you target should be the geographic location of the customer, not necessarily the location of the business. For example, suppose you have an e-commerce company and you need to target all geographic locations where the company can ship, not just where the company is.
  • If the area you are targeting is not where the merchant is, you will not see your ad when you search on Google.com.hk. However, you can useAd preview toolFind your ad.
  • If you target a small radius, your ads may only show intermittently or not at all. Because positioning with a small radius may not meet our positioning criteria.
  • It is also reasonable to ensure that the language and location targeting settings are consistent. For example, if your target audience is English-speaking users in the UK, you’ll need to choose English as the language target and write ads in English

Tips for location targeting

  • Related geographic locations: Related geographic locations may be close to the geographic location you entered, have similar names, or contain geographic locations with similar names. You can add or exclude relevant geographic locations from your campaign.
  • Nearby locations: Next to the location name, you may also see nearby links. As the name implies, nearby geographic locations mean nearby locations that you can also consider adding or excluding from campaign targeting.
